“Is this building a concert hall or a time machine?” you might ask yourselves. The answer is both. We are standing before the Sir Robert Blackwood Concert Hall. It is a place where music transcends time.
Sir Robert Blackwood Concert Hall is one of Melbourne’s most prestigious venues outside the CBD. It is named after Monash University’s founding chancellor. This hall isn’t just a building. It is a cultural landmark.
Acoustically, it ranks among the best in Australia. This makes it perfect for recordings. The ABC and Melbourne Symphony Orchestra often record here. Film scores also benefit from its acoustics.
Notice that the concert hall has no proscenium. There are no stage curtains. No fly tower either. Instead, a magnificent Sir Louis Matheson pipe organ graces the hall. Two full concert grand pianos stand ready including a Steinway.
The auditorium is climate-controlled. It has fixed seating for 1598 patrons. State-of-the-art audio and lighting systems enhance every performance.
In 2014, a master plan was developed for a functional upgrade. The goal was to expand support facilities. This included the foyer, patron amenities, and backstage areas. Refurbishments and compliance upgrades were planned. Updated technical and acoustic facilities were part of the vision. A transparent facade was planned to give the imposing building a new look.
From January to April 2024, Robert Blackwood Hall received an upgrade. Kerstin Thompson Architects oversaw the project. It was a new era for this performing arts space.
For years, the Sir Robert Blackwood Concert Hall has hosted graduation ceremonies. Countless students have celebrated their achievements here. The hall also welcomes numerous school performances. Budding talents shine here. Memories are made.
