Did you ever hear of a church born from a July 4th picnic? Saint Joseph Baptist Church has a unique origin story. Saint Joseph Baptist Church, originally known as St. John Missionary Baptist Church, began with thirteen determined souls in 1921. These founders, W. L. Thames, Hattie Thames, Arch Long, and others, first held services at Evening Chapel A.M.E. Church. Later, they moved to the Dalworth School, the designated school for Black students at the time. Now, here’s the interesting part. The proceeds from a July 4th picnic in 1923 allowed them to purchase an old store building. This humble structure became their first official home. Saint Joseph Baptist Church’s early years saw a succession of pastors, each contributing to the church’s growth. During World War II, with resources scarce, members often served both St. John and Evening Chapel A.M.E. In 1941, under Rev. L.A. Hancock, the church purchased an army chapel, moved it, and reassembled it at 2133 Spikes Street. Under Rev. B.E. Collie, the church thrived. They eliminated debt and acquired new furnishings. They even established a credit union and purchased the Medallion Apartment Complex, which later housed the Dallas County HeadStart Program. Saint Joseph Baptist Church has always been more than just a place of worship. It has been a pillar of the community, adapting to the changing times and serving the needs of its members.
