Could a church founded in 1966 be a source of Grammy-nominated gospel music? It can when it’s the Greater Metropolitan Church of Christ in Chicago. Right here, in 1966, Reverend Dr. Issac Whittmon founded this church. His dedication to his community extended beyond the pulpit. He has been a prominent figure in the gospel music scene for over 40 years. He served on the Board of Directors for the Gospel Music Workshop of America. He was also a founding member of the Chicago Gospel Museum. It seems fitting that a man with such a passion for music would also lead a church choir to a Grammy nomination! In 1977, The Greater Metropolitan Church of Christ Choir, under his direction, received this prestigious recognition for their album “The Lord Is My Light”. The album was recorded with the legendary “King of Gospel”, Reverend James Cleveland. The Greater Metropolitan Church of Christ stands as a testament to the powerful connection between faith and music in the heart of Chicago.
