Built in 1891 the Hirschbrücke Plaque stands before you. It commemorates a bridge originally designed to safely carry traffic over three railway lines. These lines served the Rheinbahn the Maxaubahn and the Kurvenbahn. Imagine the bustling scene back then trains constantly moving. The Hirschbrücke was a vital part of Karlsruhe’s infrastructure. It connected the Hirschstrasse to the Jollystrasse and the Mathystrasse.

But things changed. A new route for the Rheinbahn opened in 1895. The Kurvenbahn was decommissioned. Its tracks removed. Then in 1913 the main railway station moved. The other two lines disappeared as well. The Hirschbrücke now spanned only the Mathystrasse and Jollystrasse. Its original purpose was gone.

Yet the bridge remained. It was deeply integrated into the surrounding buildings and the elevated Hirschstrasse. Removing it proved too complex. This is a testament to the foresight of its architect Stadtbaumeister Hermann Schück. He ensured a harmonious integration with the urban landscape.

The Hirschbrücke faced damage during World War II. Plans for demolition followed in 1955. However the Südweststadt Bürgerverein a local civic association intervened. They successfully fought to preserve the bridge. They recognized its architectural importance. Its design is reminiscent of the Pont-Neuf bridge in Paris. The bridge remains a unique landmark to this day.

The Hirschbrücke Plaque not only celebrates the bridge’s history. It also highlights its enduring legacy. It served as a backdrop in episodes of the German TV series Tatort. It even featured in the film Army Go Home. For many driving instructors the bridge’s incline served as a practical lesson. The Hirschbrücke is more than just a bridge. It’s a symbol of Karlsruhe’s resilience and its unique blend of history and urban life. It is a testament to the power of community advocacy. Its continued existence is a victory for preservation.

The Hirschbrücke remains a significant site. It connects the past with the present. This bridge is a popular destination. The annual Hirschbrückenfest a local festival draws crowds. The Hirschbrücke is an integral part of Karlsruhe’s identity. Enjoy exploring this remarkable piece of Karlsruhe’s history.
