Built in 1900-1902 Werfthalle I stands proudly before you. This impressive structure is more than just a warehouse. It’s a testament to Karlsruhe’s industrial past. Designed by August Stürzenacker Werfthalle I once played a vital role in the city’s thriving port.

Imagine the bustling activity. Ships arrived laden with goods. Workers unloaded cargo onto the loading ramps. These ramps were 1.8 meters wide on the water side and 0.8 meters wide on the land side. The building itself was 70 meters long 23 meters wide and about 10 meters high. It boasted a cellar ground floor and upper floor providing approximately 4000 square meters of storage space.

Notice the red Pfinztal quarry stone. It formed the building’s sturdy exterior. A central fire wall divided the hall. One half stored duty-free goods the other held goods subject to customs. Each half had an electric freight elevator. Clever design! This ensured efficient movement of goods between floors.

The east side housed offices for customs and city administration. The west side served railroad companies and private freight forwarders. The building’s unique design with its pyramid roofs echoes a medieval fortress. It’s a unique blend of industrial practicality and historical aesthetic.

Sadly Werfthalle I suffered severe damage during World War II. A fire almost completely destroyed it. However this remarkable building was rebuilt between 1946 and 1948. Though altered it continues to stand as a symbol of resilience. It’s a reminder of Karlsruhe’s history its industrial prowess and the enduring spirit of its people. Today Werfthalle I remains a significant landmark. It represents the city’s industrial heritage. It is a powerful reminder of a bygone era.
