Beneath the wide Illinois sky, Harrer Park stretches out before us. A place of recreation and community, Harrer Park has evolved significantly since its humble beginnings. Originally a mere 20 acres donated by the Morton Grove Days Committee in 1951, Harrer Park started with just a lone backstop for baseball and softball games. Can you imagine Harrer Park with only a single backstop?
Harrer Park quickly became a focal point for Morton Grove. With increased funding, the park expanded its offerings. Weekly movies were shown, a tradition that continues to delight residents to this day. These early movie nights were a particularly smart move by the park district as they didn’t have to provide any of the equipment!
Over the decades, Harrer Park has seen remarkable transformations. In 1962, a swimming pool, bathhouse, and refreshment stand were added. Later in the 1960s, lights illuminated the baseball diamonds and tennis courts, extending play into the evening hours. The pool’s popularity surged again in 1985 with the addition of a thrilling 137-foot water slide.
A major five-year renovation project, starting in 1987, reshaped Harrer Park. Baseball diamonds were realigned, and a basketball court and tot lot were built. A lighted walking and jogging path now encircles the park, inviting residents to enjoy the outdoors. The revitalized Harrer Park was rededicated in 1992 with a grand community celebration.
Today, Harrer Park boasts five baseball/softball fields, two playgrounds, and three tennis courts. The half-mile walking path provides a scenic route for exercise and relaxation. Concessions stands offer refreshments to park-goers. Harrer Park also plays host to numerous events, including concerts, movies, and the spectacular Morton Grove Days Festival fireworks show. From its simple origins as a single backstop to the vibrant community hub it is today, Harrer Park reflects the growth and spirit of Morton Grove.
