Picture this: Raaes Gård. This building whispers tales of merchants, architects, and a city’s evolving identity.

Raaes Gård stands before you. It is more than just bricks and mortar. This building is a piece of Aarhus’s history. Let’s step back in time and uncover the stories held within these walls.

Hans Raae ordered the construction of Raaes Gård in 1798. He was a merchant and shipowner. Anders Christensen Kruuse designed it. He was an architect and builder from Horsens. The building showcases a Neoclassical style.

Originally, Raaes Gård stood on the northern edge of the city. It was near the city walls on Studsgade. Today, that street is known as Nørreport. Raae’s House is one of the finest examples of Neoclassical architecture in Aarhus. It is also one of the last remaining brick-built merchant houses from that era.

Raaes Gård consists of four wings around a central courtyard. Only the front house, facing the street, is brick. The other wings feature half-timbered structures with Baroque elements.

In the 20th century, Raaes Gård was also known as Seests Gaard. This name came from Jørgen Seest. He owned Aarhus Galvaniserings-Anstalt.

Since 1965, the Aarhus School of Architecture has called Raaes Gård home. It is the school’s administration building. In 1919, the building was listed.

In 1997, Kjaer & Richter added a modern extension. It features concrete and glass. The design intentionally contrasts the old building. The extension includes an auditorium and an exhibition hall.

In 2021, the Aarhus School of Architecture moved to a new building. It is located in the Godsbanen area. This was Denmark’s first new-built school of architecture. Raaes Gård remains a significant landmark.

Raaes Gård represents a blend of history and progress. From merchant’s house to architecture school, it has adapted to the changing times. It stands as a reminder of Aarhus’s rich architectural heritage. Take a moment to appreciate the legacy of Raaes Gård. It is a testament to the enduring power of design and innovation.
