Nestled between Peckham, East Dulwich, and Camberwell sits the Copleston Centre. It’s more than just a building. The Copleston Centre is a vibrant testament to community spirit. Originally built in the 1880s as St Saviour’s Church, it served the burgeoning population of South London. Mr. Peek, of Peek Freans biscuit fame, funded its construction, concerned about the rapid housing development leaving residents with no place of worship. For a century, it drew its congregation from Champion Hill. Then, in 1978, a transformation took place. The Copleston Centre emerged, a multi-purpose community hub built within the remodeled church. This reflected the church’s commitment to serving the local Peckham community. The redevelopment created spaces for various group activities. Initially focused on youth work, the Copleston Centre has continually adapted to meet evolving local needs. Today, the Copleston Centre is a much-loved space. It hosts a range of services, activities, and events. These cater to a diverse population, including older people, children and families, those with mental health concerns, and refugees and asylum seekers. The Copleston Centre embodies inclusivity. It welcomes everyone regardless of race, gender, sexuality, or background. This ethos aligns with its status as a joint Anglican and United Reformed Church. The main Parish Service is held every Sunday from 10-11:15 am. Services and events run throughout the week, catering to all ages. The Copleston Centre is conveniently accessible by bus. The P13 is a short walk away. Buses 40, 42, 176, 185, and 484 are also within walking distance. East Dulwich and Peckham Rye stations are a 10 and 20-minute walk away, respectively. The Copleston Centre continues to evolve. In 2024, Edwards Wilson architects were appointed to develop further plans for the building. These plans are based on consultations with local partners, stakeholders, and the community itself. The Copleston Centre relies on donations and funding to support its staff, facilities, community cafe, therapeutic programs, and activities. Its charitable work and dedication to the community make it a true cornerstone of Peckham.
