In the heart of Jakarta, a beacon of faith stands tall: Masjid Jami’ul Huda. The story of Masjid Jami’ul Huda isn’t simply one of bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to the unwavering spirit of a community. It’s a story of resilience, faith, and the pursuit of a place to worship. Masjid Jami’ul Huda’s roots intertwine with the rise of the Muhammadiyah movement in Kampung Pulo in the 1950s. It began humbly, not as a grand mosque, but as a simple prayer house known as Langgar Pak Tua Naen, or Langgar Pak Tua Kiran. In 1949, this modest structure was elevated to the status of a mosque, Masjid Al-Barkah. The early Muhammadiyah members, the very founders of Masjid Al-Barkah, toiled tirelessly, carrying sand from the Ciliwung River on their shoulders. This sand, mixed with sweat, tears, and unwavering faith, formed the foundation of their beloved mosque. Masjid Al-Barkah became more than just a place of worship. It was a symbol of their dedication and sacrifice. However, a rift began to grow between the Muhammadiyah community and the more traditional “Kaum Tua.” Differences in practices and interpretations created a divide that eventually led to the Muhammadiyah being asked to leave Al-Barkah, the very mosque they had built. Imagine the heartbreak, the injustice. But instead of succumbing to despair, the Muhammadiyah community chose a different path. They sought a new beginning. They moved to a small prayer house owned by the Saenan family. This small musala, located at the edge of Situ Asih lake, was soon overflowing with worshippers. During Ramadan, the overcrowded structure collapsed under the weight of the devout. Undeterred, they rebuilt. Their resilience paid off. Through communal fundraising, they purchased land and built a new musala, a beacon of hope for the Muhammadiyah community. This musala, a simple structure of bamboo, wood, and a thatched roof, became their spiritual home. In 1965, after a sermon by Kiai Abdul Halim, a high-ranking official from the Department of Religious Affairs, this humble musala was officially declared Masjid Jami’ul Huda. Today, Masjid Jami’ul Huda stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Muhammadiyah community in Kampung Pulo. It’s a story of resilience and a reminder that faith can overcome any obstacle. Masjid Jami’ul Huda continues to serve not only as a place of worship but as a center for education and community growth. It’s a story written not just in history books, but in the hearts of those who pray within its walls.
