“The Ocean.” That’s what they used to call this place. Can you imagine? We’re standing in the middle of Avondale Park, a haven of green, and just over a century ago, this was a massive, smelly pool of industrial waste. Hard to believe, isn’t it?

Avondale Park, opened in 1892, holds a secret beneath its vibrant flower beds and children’s laughter. It wasn’t always the peaceful space it is today. Before the park, this area was home to brickfields and tile kilns, their waste creating that infamous “Ocean.” The land was purchased from the Adams family, who probably breathed a sigh of relief when they got rid of that smelly problem! The area was filled in, and on June 2nd, 1892, Avondale Park was officially opened, named in honor of the Duke of Clarence and Avondale.

But Avondale Park hides a more somber story, one whispered beneath the rustling leaves. Deep beneath our feet lie the remnants of a World War II air raid shelter, a secret forgotten for decades. Imagine the hushed whispers, the fear and uncertainty of those sheltering here during the Blitz. Can you picture families huddled together, seeking safety from the bombs raining down on London?

The shelter was eventually cleared out, its existence fading from memory. But the next time you stroll through Avondale Park, take a moment. Close your eyes. Listen to the birdsong and children’s laughter. Remember the echoes of the past that linger beneath the surface, a testament to the resilience of London and its people.
