Fancy a tale of transformation and triumph? I’m about to share the story of Ark Putney Academy. It stands here today as a beacon of opportunity in the Putney Heath area.
Ark Putney Academy wasn’t always known by that name. Once, it was the Elliott School. Its roots stretch back to 1904, starting as Southfields School on Merton Road. In 1911, it became the Elliott School. Then, in 1956, it merged with Huntingfield Secondary Modern School. The new school found its home here on Pullman Gardens as Elliott Comprehensive School. Famous faces walked these halls. Pierce Brosnan is one notable alumnus. You might even recognize the school from films like Love Actually and The Kid Who Would Be King.
In 2012, a new chapter began. The school converted to academy status. It was then reborn as Ark Putney Academy. The main building itself is a piece of history. It’s a Grade II listed building. G A Trevett from the London County Council architects’ department designed it in the early 1950s. John Bancroft also played a role as an assistant on the project. Experts consider it among the finest large comprehensive schools. The London County Council architects built it.
Change continued for Ark Putney Academy. In 2012, Wandsworth Council made a decision. Some of the school’s open space would be sold for housing. This sale funded a major refurbishment of the main buildings. The plans included demolishing some outer buildings. Formal planning permission came through in October 2013. The refurbishment took place the following year.
Ark Putney Academy is co-educational. It serves students aged 11 to 18. The school has academy status. Ofsted, the UK’s education watchdog, has rated Ark Putney Academy as “Good” in all areas. This includes quality of education, behavior and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, and sixth form provision. The school currently accommodates 878 pupils. Its capacity is 1200. Alison Downey is the Principal.
Ark Putney Academy recently celebrated a significant achievement. It won a £5,000 Pupil Premium Award. This award recognized the school’s success in helping disadvantaged students achieve good GCSE results. Even more impressive, the GCSE results rose last year. This happened despite a national drop. The Pupil Premium funding supports additional literacy classes for students in years 7 to 11. These classes help students who are behind in their reading age. After-school homework and revision sessions are also available. Students benefit from extra time with teachers.
The funding also enables trips to top universities. Roehampton and Royal Holloway are among them. These visits encourage interest in further education. Ark Putney Academy also participates in programs like “Into University” and “Debate Mate”. These programs foster confidence and interpersonal skills. Ark Putney Academy strives to offer equal opportunities. It aims to break down social and economic barriers. By doing so, it gives all students the best life chances.
So, as we stand here, remember the journey of Ark Putney Academy. From its humble beginnings to its current status as a thriving academy. It remains committed to providing a high-quality education. It strives to empower its students to achieve their full potential.
