In 1929, Escuela 36 received a new name: Escuela 36 Bélgica. This seemingly simple fact hides a fascinating story. We’re standing before Escuela 36 Bélgica, a place that has witnessed the unfolding of history and the growth of a community. The school’s journey started much earlier, in 1890. It began as a humble rural school, known simply as School No. 23. Its precise location remains a bit of a mystery. Some believe it existed near what is now Bulevar Artigas. Over the years, Escuela 36 Bélgica moved several times, reflecting the changing needs of the growing Atahualpa neighborhood. In 1891, it relocated to 290 Millán. The following year, it found a home at the corner of Millán and Actividad, now Cané Street. In 1916, it became School No. 36. A significant move occurred in 1935, to a beautiful estate once owned by the García Lagos family. This property, situated at 3800 Millán at the corner of Larrañaga, also housed School No. 87. The two schools merged briefly, then separated again in 1940. School No. 87 was renamed School No. 105. It was given a new name, honouring the esteemed scholar Dr. Carlos Vaz Ferreira. Finally, the school we know as Escuela 36 Bélgica settled at its current location. The Belgian ambassador to Argentina, Peter Maddens, even visited the school. This visit underscored the strong ties between the school and its namesake. Escuela 36 Bélgica is more than just bricks and mortar. It represents the dedication of countless teachers and the aspirations of generations of students.
