What is the sound of many voices? The Stoneydown Speakers’ Corner, a vibrant echo of London’s rich history of free speech, beckons us closer. Unlike its famous counterpart in Hyde Park, Stoneydown Speakers’ Corner isn’t a weathered platform worn down by centuries of debate. This is a new kind of Speakers’ Corner, a 21st-century response to the age-old need for community and expression. Born from a competition hosted by Waltham Forest Council, Stoneydown Speakers’ Corner is much more than a platform. It’s a testament to the power of community collaboration. The winning design, titled “Stepping Stones”, is a series of mosaic-topped plinths weaving through the park. These plinths transform into picnic tables, chairs, and play areas, embodying the spirit of unity and communication. Stoneydown Speakers’ Corner stands as a vibrant reminder: the lifeblood of a community flows through its shared spaces and the voices that dare to fill them.
