Have you ever imagined a bird so large it could carry you away? At the Penang Bird Park, sometimes called the Big Bird House, such fantasies feel almost possible. The Penang Bird Park, nestled in Seberang Jaya on mainland Penang, isn’t just a tourist attraction. It’s a testament to one man’s lifelong passion and a haven for hundreds of bird species. The park’s creation is intertwined with the vision of the late Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu, former chief minister of Penang. He sought to balance the tourism load between the island and the mainland, envisioning a bird park, a zoo, and a relocated aquarium. Only the Penang Bird Park, sometimes known as Big Bird House, took flight. Its founder, Dr Gino Ooi, nurtured a childhood fascination with birds into a remarkable career. His early experiences caring for rescued birds, combined with his brother’s help, laid the foundation for this vibrant sanctuary. Originally intended for the island, Dr Lim convinced Ooi to establish the park in Seberang Jaya. This decision, initially met with apprehension, eventually proved pivotal to the park’s success. The Big Bird House opened its doors in 1988. For many years it struggled financially. The turning point came in 2007 when road access to the park was significantly improved, leading to a surge in visitors. The Big Bird House has not only displayed birds but also nurtured them. The park became known for its rehabilitation efforts. Injured birds, even those with severe injuries, found a second chance under Ooi’s care. One remarkable story involves two white-bellied sea eagles. Both collided with RMAF jets and suffered broken wings. Thanks to Ooi’s dedicated care, they recovered and now reside within the park. Another remarkable feat involved a mother and chick helmeted hornbill, rescued from a logging site. Ooi’s ability to successfully care for these critically endangered birds speaks volumes about his deep understanding of avian needs. Today, the Big Bird House continues to expand and improve. Ooi’s dedication extends beyond the park’s physical growth. He emphasizes the importance of appropriate enclosure sizes, recognizing the impact on bird well-being. He advocates for the humane treatment of birds in captivity. He highlights their breeding success as a testament to their contentment within the park. The Penang Bird Park, also known as the Big Bird House, represents a blend of tourism, conservation, and education. It tells a story of unwavering passion and commitment to the avian world. As you explore this vibrant haven, remember the journey behind its creation. Appreciate the dedication that has made it a sanctuary for so many feathered creatures.
