Who remembers card catalogs? Those towering cabinets filled with meticulously typed index cards. Well, here at the Round Rock Public Library, they once held the key to a world of knowledge. The Round Rock Public Library, a cornerstone of this community, has a rich history, evolving from a much humbler beginning. It all started in 1962 with the Round Rock Ladies Home Demonstration Club. They saw a need and rallied the community to create the first library board. They transformed an old Ford Motor Company building on Main Street, the very site of the infamous Sam Bass shootout of 1878, into a haven for books and learning. Imagine, the echoes of history mingling with the quiet rustle of turning pages. The original library space, remodeled by local craftsmen and even Round Rock High School students, served the community for years. The Round Rock Public Library faced challenges along the way. Structural damage in 1978 forced a temporary move to Liberty Street. The community rallied together, moving books and equipment to keep the spirit of the library alive. By 1980, a new two-story structure was built on the original site, a testament to the community’s dedication. The Round Rock Public Library continued to grow. In 1988, a major renovation ushered in the era of automated library systems, replacing those very card catalogs we talked about. A library foundation was formed, further solidifying its role in Round Rock. Then came the big expansion. In 1999, after a successful bond issue, the Round Rock Public Library blossomed into a 43,000-square-foot space. It was named in honor of Robert G. and Helen Griffith, two long-time library supporters. The library continued to thrive and serve the community. In 2023, a new, even larger building opened its doors, marking another exciting chapter in the Round Rock Public Library’s story. This modern, three-story structure stands as a symbol of the city’s commitment to knowledge and community. The Round Rock Public Library is more than just books. It offers a wealth of resources, from genealogical research in partnership with the Williamson County Genealogical Society to vibrant teen programs. So next time you visit the Round Rock Public Library, take a moment to appreciate its journey. From a repurposed Ford dealership to a state-of-the-art facility, it stands as a testament to the power of community and the enduring love of learning.
