Wasn’t it a former grocery store? That’s right Geels Kirkesal in Copenhagen wasn’t always a church. This unassuming building on Bredevej 52 in Virum is a testament to community spirit and perseverance. Built in 1991 it was transformed from a humble shop into a vibrant place of worship.
Geels Kirkesal holds a fascinating story. It’s a story of growth and adaptation in the face of a booming population. In the 1940s and 50s Lundtofte experienced a population explosion. The need for a church in this area became urgent. For a while they used the Geelsgård boarding school’s hall for Sunday services. A temporary fix to a growing problem.
The story continues. Plans for a grand new church were sidelined after the construction of Sorgenfri Kirke in 1966. The focus shifted. The community revisited an older idea a church on the Open Air Museum. The idea was to relocate an existing historic church. A beautiful idea but never realised.
Instead the existing funds a considerable 350 000 kr were used. They repurposed a former grocery store. They created Geels Kirkesal. They created not just a church but also confirmation rooms. Geels Kirkesal a symbol of resourcefulness and faith. It demonstrates the community’s commitment to their religious practices. A testament to faith and community.
Today Geels Kirkesal thrives. It serves the community with regular services and events. Remember this unassuming building when you think about the history of Copenhagen.
