Established in the 1930s SJK & SMJK Sacred Heart stands as a testament to resilience and faith. Initially founded by nuns it began with just two teachers and a hundred Hakka students. These students were descendants of refugees who fled southern China after the Taiping Rebellion. They sought refuge in Balik Pulau embracing Roman Catholicism alongside a new life.
The school’s early years were humble. Lessons were taught in Mandarin. Classes were held in existing buildings before a new structure with ten classrooms was built in 1956. The old building was repurposed as a science lab and teacher’s rooms. In 1957 government support transformed it into a national school. Further expansion followed with new science labs and classrooms added in subsequent years.
The 1960s through the 1980s witnessed significant growth. A basketball court appeared in 1962. A three-story building Block B was constructed in 1970. A bicycle shed followed in 1971. The school hall and canteen were built in 1973. A larger four-story building Block A containing fourteen classrooms a science lab staff rooms and administrative offices opened in 1979. Another basketball court was added in 1980 thanks to a generous donation from the Balik Pulau Member of Parliament YB En Shamsuei B Hj Md Salleh. By 1984 the school even boasted a computer room a sign of progress in those early computing days.
