Feel the rhythm. That’s the Dance Mission Theater. Right here in San Francisco’s vibrant Mission District this nonprofit performance venue pulsates with energy. Dance Mission Theater isn’t just a theater. It’s a community hub a school a social justice advocate all rolled into one dynamic space.
Since 1998 this building has housed Dance Brigade a pioneering female dance troupe committed to social change. They use dance as a tool for empowerment and advocacy. They’ve tackled tough issues through their performances. The theater itself has faced its own challenges. A rent hike in 2014 threatened its existence. But the Dance Mission Theater fought back securing support from the city and the community.

The Black Choreographers Festival held its annual showcase here. The theater even celebrated Jeff Chang’s book Can’t Stop Won’t Stop with a multidisciplinary performance. In 2019 Dance Mission Theater had plans to relocate to a new building at 18th and Mission streets alongside other nonprofits.
