Can you believe that this sprawling shopping centre was once a quarry? You can still see hints of its former life in the exposed cliff faces of the lower car parks. Highpoint Mall, the third largest shopping centre in Victoria, is a true testament to Melbourne’s vibrant retail scene. It boasts over 500 stores and services, including some of Australia’s biggest names like David Jones and Myer.
But Highpoint is more than just a place to shop. Its history is intertwined with the development of Melbourne’s western suburbs. Built on a hill overlooking the Maribyrnong River, the name “Highpoint” captures the site’s unique geography. In fact, during World War II, an anti-aircraft battery was stationed right here, protecting the surrounding military bases. The quarry was sold in the early 1970s and Highpoint West, as it was initially called, opened in 1975. It gradually evolved into the modern complex we see today.
Over the years, Highpoint has witnessed a series of redevelopments. In 2011, a significant 30,000 square meter expansion added a new David Jones department store and a plethora of other specialty stores. But Highpoint isn’t resting on its laurels. There’s a bold vision for the future. The GPT Group, the current owner of the mall, has unveiled a 30-year plan called “Highpoint Urban Village”. This plan envisions a vibrant, diverse, and sustainable community incorporating new housing, public spaces, and a state-of-the-art library, ensuring that Highpoint remains a thriving hub for generations to come.
