What secrets lie buried beneath the tranquil facade of Rokujo Hachimangu Shrine? We’re standing before the Rokujo Hachimangu Shrine, a place deeply rooted in the history of Hiroshima. While many associate Hiroshima with the devastation of World War II, this shrine whispers tales from a time long before that fateful day. Legend claims the very ground we stand on was once part of an imperial estate during the reign of Emperor Sujin. It is said that in the year 995, during the reign of Emperor Ichijo, a grand treasure hall was constructed here. This hall, dedicated to the revered Hachiman Trinity, marked the humble beginnings of Rokujo Hachimangu Shrine. Our shrine’s name, Rokujo Hachimangu, has an intriguing origin. It’s believed to stem from a powerful figure, Minamoto no Yoritomo. As the story goes, in 1123, Yoritomo, then the lord of Yamada Manor, sought a divine blessing for his wife. He journeyed to the Rokujyo Nishi no Toin Temple in Kyoto, famous for its enshrined deity, the Zeniarai Benzaiten. Inspired by the temple’s dedication to the Hachiman deities, Yoritomo commissioned the construction of a new shrine. This new shrine, built in honor of Hachiman and echoing the spirit of Rokujyo Nishi no Toin, became known as Rokujo Hachimangu. Through the ages, Rokujo Hachimangu has stood as a silent sentinel to the ebb and flow of history. While the atomic bomb brought unimaginable destruction to Hiroshima, the shrine emerged, a testament to the enduring spirit of this city. Step inside, and let the tranquility of this sacred space wash over you. Feel the weight of centuries past and the enduring hope for a peaceful future.
