Imagine the laughter of children echoing around you. This is John Wilson Park. It’s more than just a playground. It’s a piece of Bridgeport’s history.
John Wilson Park wasn’t always called that. Back in 1930, the City of Chicago bought this land with Playground Bond funds. They quickly built a fieldhouse. It became a popular spot in the neighborhood.
For years, the City’s Bureau of Parks and Recreation managed it. That changed in 1957. The Chicago Park District took over. This happened thanks to the Chicago Park and City Exchange of Functions Act.
In 1933, the park got its name. The City Council named it Wilson Playground. This honored John P. Wilson. He was a Bridgeport Alderman from 1925 to 1929. He also chaired the council’s Committee on Recreation.
Wilson served the city in other ways too. In 1933, he became Deputy Commissioner of Public Works. He stayed in that role until 1967. That’s a long time dedicated to public service.
There’s also a Wilson Community Center nearby. It also bears Alderman Wilson’s name. Both places remind us of his contributions.
To avoid confusion, the park got a new official name in 1999. The Park District called it John P. Wilson Park. This distinguished it from another Wilson Park on the northwest side.
Today, John Wilson Park spans 1.48 acres. It’s a cozy spot in the Bridgeport Community. The small fieldhouse hosts activities for toddlers. Table games are also played there.
Outside, kids can cool off at the interactive water spray feature. The playground is always buzzing with energy. It is equipped with different structures for younger and older children, along with the water spray feature.
John Wilson Park offers pre-school programs all year. In summer, there’s a popular six-week play camp. Toddlers have a blast here.
The park also hosts special events for the whole family. There are holiday activities and even pictures with the Bunny. It is located at 1122 W. 34th Pl.
Look around you at John Wilson Park. You see the poured in place rubber, benches, drinking fountains, building/bathroom access, and water feature.
Notice the corkscrew climber. Observe the single straight slide. Check out the spiral beanstalk steps. Admire the gear panel and triple shower sprayer.
See the foot step bridge. Spot the steppers. Don’t miss the vertical climbing net. It is a solid neighborhood playground.
John Wilson Park is more than just swings and slides. It’s a place where memories are made. It is a place where community comes together. So take a moment to appreciate this little corner of Bridgeport.
