“Do you see how gracefully Husni Thamrin stands?” The Patung Husni Thamrin Statue commemorates a remarkable Betawi hero. This statue is more than just bronze. It symbolizes a life dedicated to Indonesian independence.

The Patung Husni Thamrin Statue stands on Jl. Medan Merdeka Selatan in Central Jakarta. It was inaugurated on June 3 2012 by Governor Fauzi Bowo. Sculptor Ketut Dinarta created it. The statue cost Rp 2 billion. Donors funded this tribute.

Husni Thamrin was born on February 16 1894. He was a prominent politician during the Dutch East Indies era. Thamrin fought for Indonesian interests in political forums. He was active nationally and internationally.

The Patung Husni Thamrin is 5 meters tall. Catharina Suryowati explained its meaning. Thamrin stands gracefully. His left hand holds a paper roll. This symbolizes his ideas. His open right hand shows openness to the people.

Thamrin’s impact extended beyond politics. He donated 2000 guilders in 1932. This established a football field for indigenous people in Petojo. He was a key figure in the Dutch East Indies football world.

At 25 Thamrin was elected to Batavia’s Municipal Council. In 1929 he founded the Society of The Betawi. This organization fought for Betawi people’s interests. Thamrin proposed clean water for drinking. The government approved a water channel. It is now known as Pejompongan water purification.

In 1927 at 33 Thamrin became a member of the Volksraad or House of Representatives. He demanded the abolition of Peonale sanctie in Sumatra. This system caused great misery. Finally, it was abolished. Thamrin donated his home as a meeting place for national movement leaders. His home is now the M Husni Thamrin Museum.

In 1938 he became Vice Chairman of Parindra. In 1939 Thamrin proposed changing Dutch terms to Indonesian ones. He wanted Indie Nederlands to become Indonesia. Although the Volksraad agreed, the colonial government rejected this.

On January 6 1941 Thamrin was detained. He was accused of collaborating with Japan. Suffering from diabetes he died five days later. His death was controversial. Some say he was killed not suicide. Over 10000 mourners escorted his funeral. They demanded independence from the Netherlands.

Today the Patung Husni Thamrin reminds us of his contributions. He was declared a National Hero of Indonesia in 1964. Jalan M.H. Thamrin a major street bears his name. The Mohammad Husni Thamrin School honors gifted students. His legacy lives on in Jakarta.

Feel free to take pictures with the Patung Husni Thamrin Statue. It looks good even at night. Remember Thamrin’s spirit. He stood for openness ideas and the Indonesian people. This statue is not just a monument. It embodies a hero’s enduring legacy.
