Step into the heart of Vauxhall, London, and you’ll find yourself standing before St Anne’s Catholic Church, a grand edifice that has witnessed the changing face of this vibrant neighborhood for over a century. It wasn’t always this grand structure, though. The story of St Anne’s Catholic Church dates back to the 1860s, when a retired teacher opened a small school in a disused shop near the Wesleyan Chapel. It was a humble beginning, but one that sparked a flame of faith in the hearts of the community. The Order of Notre Dame de Namur, based near the Cathedral, saw an opportunity to serve the growing Catholic community. They built a school for girls and infants across the road from what are now the Guinness Buildings. However, in 1891, the Diocese acquired a site for a Church and school in Upper Kennington Lane, now Kennington Lane. The site was almost an acre in size, and it had a frontage in Harleyford Road, near Kennington Oval. The land came with four houses, the rest being used as a builder’s yard. This was quite a valuable site, and the Diocese secured it for a mere £7,000. The construction of the school began in May, and the Diocese raised £4,250 through a loan, the interest on which was almost entirely met by the rents from the houses and the builder’s yard. The school was finished just before Christmas, 1892, offering much-needed space for the growing community. The building also served as a temporary church, with Mass held in the school on Sundays, and in the Priest’s House on weekdays. But it didn’t take long for the community to yearn for their own dedicated church building. The wait was long and arduous, spanning several decades, but ultimately, patience and perseverance prevailed. A new site was secured, plans were drawn, and on November 3, 1901, Cardinal Bourne, then Bishop of Southwark, laid the foundation stone of St Anne’s Catholic Church. The church’s construction faced challenges, mainly financial ones. The Mission was burdened by debts, and it took years to raise the necessary funds to complete the building. Yet, the spirit of the community never waned. Miss Mary Allanson of Clapham, a generous benefactor, donated the funds to complete the Sanctuary of the Church, offering a much-needed boost to the project. Thanks to the generosity of Miss Allanson and others, the church was finally completed in 1907. Today, as you stand before St Anne’s Catholic Church, you can feel the spirit of its past. You can sense the unwavering faith of the people who contributed to its construction. It is a reminder of the enduring power of community and the transformative impact of generosity. St Anne’s isn’t just a church, it is a testament to a journey, a journey filled with challenges and triumphs. It’s a reminder that even the most ambitious dreams can be fulfilled with determination and faith. So, as you marvel at the grandeur of St Anne’s Cathedral, remember the people and their story, for they are the soul of this remarkable building.
