Did you know that the Europahuset, right here in front of you, was once the tallest building in Aarhus? It was built in 1959. That’s about 65 years ago! The Europahuset was originally called BP-huset. The name changed later. Imagine being here back then, when it was truly something special. It was a symbol of progress and a modern way of life. It was designed by the architects Knud Blach Petersen and Herbert Jensen. They also designed the famous Gellerupparken housing project in Aarhus. The building is located on a rather unique site, right on the waterfront. The people from Aarhus had quite a time watching the old buildings being demolished to make way for the new one. They used a giant concrete block hung from a crane smashing the walls and anything else in sight. The area was once known to the locals as “Brandvinsen”. This meant the “brandy-yard” due to the many taverns that used to be there. Today, the Europahuset is a much different symbol. Still modern and stylish, it’s a reminder of a time when the city was trying to find its place in the world. So look around, imagine the past, let your mind wander, and enjoy the history.
