Fifty years ago a candlelit procession wound its way through the streets. It was the Paróquia Nossa Senhora de Fátima Rainha de Todos os Santos. Father Luiz João Cordioli led the way. He carried a statue of Our Lady of Fatima. His devotion was profound. It stemmed from a promise made years earlier. A promise whispered in Florianópolis. A promise to build a church honoring the Virgin Mary.
The Paróquia Nossa Senhora de Fátima Rainha de Todos os Santos wasn’t built overnight. It began in 1945. Father Cordioli was appointed chaplain of the Convent of the Holy Trinity. This was a humble beginning. His dream of a grand church devoted to Our Lady of Fatima seemed distant. Then in 1956 Cardinal Archbishop Dom Jaime de Barros Câmara intervened. He asked Father Cordioli to establish a new parish. This was the sign Father Cordioli had waited for. It was time to fulfill his vow.
The construction was a community effort. Father Cordioli’s nightly processions became legendary. He went from house to house. He prayed the Rosary. He shared scripture. He inspired faith. The small chapel at 158 Rua Adriano was their first sanctuary. It only had ten benches. The community grew rapidly though. The church expanded.
Finally on May 28 1967 the Paróquia Nossa Senhora de Fátima Rainha de Todos os Santos was officially opened. Father Cordioli sadly did not live to see it. He had passed away the previous year. His dedication and tireless work however laid the foundation for this thriving parish. The church’s facade features a depiction of the Miracle of the Sun. It’s a testament to the community’s faith. The artist Ivan Ivan even used faces from the community as models.
Today the Paróquia Nossa Senhora de Fátima Rainha de Todos os Santos stands as a beacon of faith. It continues to offer solace comfort and hope. It is a living embodiment of a promise kept. It is a testament to the devotion and perseverance of Father Cordioli and his parishioners. It is a place where the miracle of faith continues to unfold. It’s more than just a building. It is a heart beating with devotion and love.
