Right here in Docklands, Melbourne, stands a testament to artistic ingenuity. It’s John Mead’s Aqualung sculpture. Have you ever paused to consider the story it holds?

Aqualung is not just metal and form. It’s an idea brought to life. Bovis Lend Lease wanted a sculpture for their new Docklands development. They commissioned a large piece to fill the concourse level. John Mead’s maquette won. AG Public Art then stepped in to make it a reality.

The challenge was significant. Aqualung needed to be large and accurate. Mead’s small artwork was meticulously mapped into a 3D model. This allowed for the design of a larger version. The team opted for glass-reinforced concrete. This material was chosen due to its ability to create a smooth, one-piece object. Transporting such a large piece presented another hurdle. The final Aqualung sculpture weighs nine tonnes and stretches thirty metres. AG Public Art handled the design, development, and project management.

But what does Aqualung represent? Melbourne artist John Mead created Aqualung. It is a sleek abstract sculpture. The sculpture is loosely based on the breathing apparatus of the human body. It disrupts the clean efficient architecture around it. Aqualung has a peaceful contemplative and timeless presence. You can find it in the busy public thoroughfare. It is in the North-South link of the NAB buildings. Many find that Aqualung can take one’s breath away.

Mead’s Aqualung resides on Captain’s Walk. This walkway runs between the NAB buildings. The buildings address is 800 Bourke Street. Docklands itself is a hub for public art. The Docklands Public Art Walk features 36 outdoor artworks. These artworks are situated in parks, promenades, and built into the architecture. The complete walk takes a couple of hours. It would be well worth it.

Aqualung quietly emerges from underground. It stands as a sleek contrast to the surrounding architecture. Imagine the artist’s vision. A breathing apparatus transformed into a monumental sculpture. It invites contemplation amidst the urban bustle.

The next time you see Aqualung, remember its journey. Remember the artistic vision. Think about the technical challenges overcome to bring it to life. Consider the quiet statement it makes in this busy place. It is a Melbourne icon. It stands as a testament to creativity. It reminds us of the intersection between art and engineering. It gives us a moment of peace. This peaceful and contemplative artwork will surely take your breath away.
