Once merely a haven for boys, Downsend School has transformed over the years. Downsend School stands as a testament to the evolving landscape of education. Founded in the leafy outskirts of London, Downsend School began its journey in 1898 as a preparatory school for boys. A.H. Linford, the visionary behind the institution, originally established Peterborough Lodge in Hampstead. After relocating its boarders to escape the upheaval of World War II, Downsend School merged with Peterborough Lodge at its current location in Leatherhead. For almost a century, the Linford family nurtured Downsend School, leaving an undeniable mark on its ethos. The school thrived, gaining recognition for its academic rigor and producing a steady stream of scholarship holders to prestigious public schools. Today, Downsend School welcomes both boys and girls, aged six months to sixteen, across its four campuses. The school may have outgrown its exclusively male domain, but its commitment to holistic education persists. This commitment is seen in its strong emphasis on practical subjects, such as Information Technology, Textiles, and Food Technology. Downsend School’s dedication to providing students with a well-rounded education ensures they are well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities of the modern world.
