What kind of impact can one person have on a city? Look around you. We’re standing in front of Biglow Street Mission. This place is a testament to the vision and dedication of one man, Reverend Robert J. Key. In the heart of Dallas, Biglow Street Mission stands as a beacon of hope. It’s a place where lives are transformed and hope is rekindled. But its story is deeply intertwined with the man who started it all. In 1949, Reverend Key co-founded the Union Gospel Mission. He saw a growing need in the city, a need amplified by the post-war years as homelessness increased. Driven by compassion, he took a leap of faith. He left the Union Gospel Mission to establish what would become Dallas LIFE, originally the Dallas Rescue Mission. It began humbly in 1954, a small storefront on Commerce Street, just blocks from the city jail. Imagine those early days: 25 men finding shelter and a hot meal each night, ministered to by Reverend Key. For 25 years, he and his dedicated volunteers kept the mission’s doors open every single night, a testament to their unwavering commitment. This legacy of compassion continues to this day in the form of Biglow Street Mission, a reminder that even one person can spark extraordinary change.
