Hidden in plain sight, Karens Minde is more than just a park. It’s a clever fusion of nature and engineering. This green oasis in Copenhagen’s Sydhavn district is built around a winding brick path. This path isn’t just for leisurely strolls. It’s a key part of the park’s cloudburst protection system. Karens Minde sits in a low-lying area, once prone to flooding. Now, the path guides rainwater through a series of filtration basins. This innovative design earned the park the Berlingske’s “City’s Best Urban Space” award in 2023.

Karens Minde’s history stretches back to the late 18th century. It began as a modest farm and later became a botanical haven for apothecary Marx Boye. He cultivated medicinal herbs here, supplying his renowned Løveapoteket in Copenhagen. The name “Karens Minde” appeared in 1856, a tribute by merchant Jacob Arnkiel to his grandmother.

The park’s story took a dramatic turn in 1879 with Johan Keller. He transformed Karens Minde into an asylum for people with intellectual disabilities. The striking red-brick building, designed by architect Vilhelm Klein, housed the institution for over a century. This era is documented in Birgit Kirkebæk’s 2007 book, “Inept and Useless,” which chronicles the asylum’s sometimes-controversial history.

After the institution’s closure in 1987, Karens Minde faced an uncertain future. The building fell into disrepair, threatened with demolition. Local residents rallied, envisioning a cultural hub. Their persistence paid off. Following extensive renovations, Karens Minde Kulturhus opened its doors in 2001, a testament to community spirit.

Today, Karens Minde thrives as a vibrant community center. It hosts a library, a café, and various cultural events. The adjacent Børnenes Dyremark (Children’s Animal Farm) adds to the area’s appeal. The park’s design preserves the area’s biodiversity. Existing trees were protected, and seventy new ones planted. The rainwater basin area is intentionally left undisturbed, a haven for small animals and insects. Karens Minde seamlessly blends history, nature, and community engagement, offering a unique experience for all who visit.
