“Dedicated to Peace” is what I think of standing here. Today we explore Hiroshima City’s Kakogawa Elementary School. This school carries a rich history and a commitment to its students.
Kakogawa Elementary School first opened its doors in 1909. It was initially named Kakogawa Jinjo Elementary School. The name was derived from the villages it served. These were Kakogawa, Kouchigahara and Kamifukawa. Each village contributed a character to form “Kakogawa”.
Interestingly, these three villages still define the school district today. In 1889 municipalities were established. Anjo County was formed in 1898. In 1955 Kakogawa village merged with others to form Koyo Town. The school was renamed Koyo Town Kakogawa Elementary School.
In 1973 Koyo Town joined Hiroshima City. The school got its current name Hiroshima City Kakogawa Elementary School. This name reflects its place in the city.
The school faced a setback in 1928. A fire damaged part of the school building. But a new school building was erected that same year.
In 1941 the school became Kakogawa National School. It reverted to Kakogawa Elementary School in 1947. The school expanded in 1953. The grounds were enlarged. A wooden two-story school building was built. The school song and emblem were also created that year.
Kakogawa Elementary School was honored in 1965. It was recognized as an excellent health school. An indoor pool was completed in 1969.
A stone monument was erected in 1981. It commemorated the school’s health award. The monument is inscribed with “Because we are strong”. A four-story reinforced concrete school building was completed in 1983. A new playground was also built. An indoor gymnasium followed in 1984.
City water facilities were installed in 1988. An indoor sand pit was added in 1992. The Kakogawa Children’s Hall was completed in 1993.
Kakogawa Elementary School celebrated its centennial in 2008. A commemorative ceremony marked the occasion.
The school aims to nurture well-rounded students. It focuses on academic ability. It also focuses on physical strength and life skills. The school promotes rich minds and independence.
