Picture the Hanover Bridge a historic marvel. This isn’t just any bridge. It’s a testament to engineering ingenuity. Built in 1885 by the Morse Bridge Company of Youngstown Ohio. It’s a pin-connected Pratt through truss bridge. The Hanover Bridge spans the Crow River. It connects Hanover and Rogers Minnesota. It sits on the border of Wright and Hennepin Counties.

This remarkable structure is more than just a pathway. It’s a piece of living history. It’s the second-oldest Pratt truss bridge still standing in Minnesota. The bridge boasts a length of 231 feet. Its roadbed is 15.1 feet wide. It offers a vertical clearance of 13.5 feet. The wooden deck which was originally installed was replaced in 1965. It was designed to resemble the original.

Now imagine the Hanover Bridge in its prime. Wagons and carriages once rumbled across it. People walked and rode horses. It served as a vital link between communities. It even played a role in a stagecoach line established in 1909. This line ran from Rockford to Osseo via Burschville. The bridge was used as a part of that route.

But the bridge wasn’t always easy to traverse. From 1943 to 1952 weight restrictions were in place. School children had a unique experience. They had to get off their buses on one side and walk across. After the buses crossed the children would reboard on the other side.

In 1963 the Hanover Bridge became pedestrian-only. A wooden stilt bridge was built nearby in 1954. It collapsed in April 1965 due to an ice dam. A modern concrete bridge was built 1500 feet to the west. The historic Hanover Bridge was used for traffic again from April 1965 to December 1966.

Today the Hanover Bridge stands as a symbol of resilience and perseverance. The Hanover citizens renovated the bridge in the 1980s. Additional rehabilitation work was done in 2004. It’s a treasured landmark and a reminder of Hanover’s rich history. It continues to serve the community. It’s used as a pedestrian bridge today. A perfect place to reflect on the past while enjoying the beauty of the present. This bridge is more than just a structure. It represents the spirit of Hanover.
