Did the Archbishop of Melbourne ever imagine dedicating a church in the suburbs? He did just that in 1969, right here at the Anglican Church of the Ascension in Burwood East. Archbishop Frank Woods consecrated this very church on Ascension Day. The Anglican Church of the Ascension stands at the corner of Blackburn Road and Witchwood Street. Its simple, modern design blends into the neighborhood, yet it holds a special place in the community’s heart. The church has been serving the spiritual needs of Burwood East residents for over five decades. The original architect remains unknown, adding a little mystery to this house of worship. While the organ details remain a mystery, we do know the land rests on the traditional territories of the Wurundjeri people. Reverend Kenneth John Brierty served this community from 1961 to 1962. He passed away in 2019. Several other clergy have guided the Anglican Church of the Ascension over the years, including Rev. R. L. Braddon and Rev. Raymond Charles Brooks. More recently, Rev. Robyn Boyd and Rev. Anthony Frost have carried on the tradition of service. As you stand here, consider the generations who have sought solace and community within these walls. The Anglican Church of the Ascension represents more than just bricks and mortar. It symbolizes a constant presence of faith in a changing world.
