Established in 1957 Westlake Girls High School initially welcomed both boys and girls. This co-educational arrangement however was short-lived. By 1962 Westlake Girls High School became a single-sex institution. Its sister school Westlake Boys High School opened that same year. Westlake Girls High School now stands as a testament to female education in New Zealand.

The school’s history is rich with notable figures. Alison Gernhoefer served as principal for three decades. Her dedication earned her a Companion of the Queen’s Service Order. The Gernhoefer Administration building proudly bears her name. Sadly she passed away in 2022. Roz Mexted succeeded her followed by the current principal Jane Stanley. Mrs Stanley’s husband Mike Stanley is a former Olympic rower a fact that perhaps adds a unique dimension to the school’s atmosphere.

Westlake Girls High School isn’t just defined by its impressive academic achievements. The school fosters a strong sense of community. A house system based on the five Olympic rings unites students. Akoranga Hauraki Onewa Pupuke and Wairau represent the colours black gold red blue and green respectively. This system promotes school spirit and unity.

Though geographically separate Westlake Girls and Westlake Boys High Schools share a close relationship. They collaborate on various projects including annual theatrical productions joint musical ensembles and social dances. Their shared motto Virtute Experiamur Let Courage Be Thy Test underlines this bond.

Westlake Girls High School boasts many impressive alumnae. These women have excelled in various fields from sports such as tennis sailing and rugby to the arts politics and other professions. Their accomplishments serve as inspiration for current students highlighting the school’s legacy of empowering young women. Westlake Girls High School is more than just an institution. It is a community a legacy and a launchpad for future leaders. The school’s commitment to excellence and its rich history continue to shape the lives of its students. Westlake Girls High School truly stands as an impressive institution in New Zealand.
