Why would anyone build a department store here? This magnificent building, the Goldblatt’s Building, seems oddly out of place now, doesn’t it? But back in the 1920s, this was a bustling commercial district. Polish immigrants, the Goldblatt brothers, saw an opportunity. They opened their flagship store here in 1928. Imagine, this grand edifice was once filled with shoppers hunting for bargains. Goldblatt’s was famous for its motto: “We Will Not Be Undersold”. They sold everything from suits to candy, furniture to garden supplies. The store thrived for decades, a testament to the entrepreneurial spirit of the Goldblatt brothers. But like many grand old stores, Goldblatt’s eventually faced hard times. By 2003, all the stores were gone. But this building, thankfully, survived. Today, the Goldblatt’s Building stands as a proud reminder of a bygone era and a symbol of Chicago’s resilience.
