Gazing at the Minnetrista Baptist Church, one might wonder about the stories held within its walls. The Minnetrista Baptist Church has witnessed over a century and a half of faith, community, and growth. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of belief.
The story of Minnetrista Baptist Church begins in 1857. A small group of German families, newly arrived from Dayton, Ohio, began meeting in homes for worship. These families, led by Rev. John Wendt, officially founded Minnetrista Baptist Church in November 1858. Encouraged by the nearby Scandia Baptist Church, they sought to create a space where they could worship in their native German language. Rev. Wendt guided the congregation for its first 18 years.
In 1868, the church constructed its first building. This wooden structure stood across the street east of the current church. After a brief period with a different pastor and an interim period without one, Rev. Wendt returned to lead the congregation once more. During his second tenure, plans for a new building began to take shape. This new church became the first on the present site. It was built during the leadership of Rev. C.C. Langlatz. Under Rev. Langlatz, the church experienced significant growth, even establishing short-lived preaching stations in Mound, Chaska, and Watertown. A more permanent mission was started in Hutchinson, which eventually became Hunter’s Ridge Community Church.
Rev. H. Bens served as the next pastor. Then, in 1901, Rev. F.H. Heinemann arrived, beginning a remarkable 37-year ministry at Minnetrista Baptist Church. The current church building, a testament to his enduring influence, was started in 1912.
Since Rev. Heinemann, a succession of pastors have continued to guide the congregation, each adding their own chapter to the church’s history. From Rev. August Lutz to Rev. Ralph Lutter, Rev. D.S. Wipf, Rev. Thomas Harfst, Rev. Fred Klien, Rev. Delvin Bertsch, Rev. Ken Unruh, Rev. Al Tuley, and Rev. John McNabb, each pastor has contributed to the rich tapestry of Minnetrista Baptist Church.
The Minnetrista Baptist Church is more than just a building. It is a living testament to the faith and dedication of generations. It is a place where lives have been touched, communities have been strengthened, and the message of faith continues to resonate.
