Nestled in the heart of Inhaúma, one of Rio de Janeiro’s oldest suburbs, stands the Paróquia São Tiago. This isn’t just any church. It’s a beacon of faith, a testament to time, and a cornerstone of the community. Paróquia São Tiago’s story begins on July 25, 1684. It wasn’t always known as Paróquia São Tiago. Originally a small chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Imaculada Conceição, it was generously donated by Agostinho Pimenta de Morais to establish a more permanent place of worship. The church officially became a “capela curada” in 1716 under Vigário Geral Clemente Martins de Matos. The exact date when it became a full-fledged parish, Paróquia São Tiago, is a bit of a mystery. Historical records suggest it happened around 1750. Look closely at the facade. The first level features a rectangular design, punctuated by six rectangular windows, three on either side of the main entrance. Above the doorway, a panel depicts the church’s patron saint, São Tiago. Crowning the entire structure is a grand central tower, topped with a cross. Inside the Paróquia São Tiago, you’ll find a warm and welcoming community. The church serves as a hub for masses, religious events, and community gatherings. The historical architecture and the beautiful artwork create a serene spiritual haven. Paróquia São Tiago offers ample parking, making it easily accessible to worshippers and visitors alike. It’s open almost every day of the week, welcoming all who seek solace and connection within its historic walls. From Monday to Friday, the doors open at 7 am and close at 10 pm. On Saturdays, it closes a bit earlier at 7 pm. Sundays are bustling with activity, with the church open from 6 am to 10 pm. Mass is celebrated several times throughout the week. Check the schedule for the most up-to-date times. Beyond the regular masses, Paróquia São Tiago offers various other services, including confessions, baptisms, weddings, and funerals. It’s more than just a building; it’s the heart of the Inhaúma community.
