Did you know that this seemingly peaceful church has witnessed tumultuous events? Welcome to the Église Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité de Bercy. Its history is not just about stained glass and sermons. It’s a story of resilience and survival in the heart of Paris.

Imagine the village of Bercy in 1677. Far from the main parish church villagers needed their own place of worship. The fathers of Christian doctrine built a convent church. They named it Notre-Dame de Bon Secours. This humble beginning laid the foundation for what we see today. It became a parish church in 1790.

However its story is marked by destruction. In 1821 it fell into ruins and needed rebuilding. Architect André Chatillon took on this project. The rebuilt church was consecrated in 1826. A new name was chosen: Notre-Dame de la Nativité. This name celebrates the birth of Jesus.

But the trials weren’t over. The Paris Commune in 1871 brought another destruction. In the bloody week the church was set ablaze. It was the only Parisian church to suffer this fate.

Again it was rebuilt. This time architect Antoine-Julien Hénard replicated the original design. He also rebuilt the nearby town hall. The church reopened its doors.

Further challenges tested its strength. A severe flood in 1910 completely submerged the Église Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité. World War II brought damage from nearby bombings. Then a 1982 fire destroyed parts of the interior. Yet through it all the Église Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité endured. It continues to serve its community.

Inside you will find a remarkable collection of religious paintings. Works by Jacques Stella and Charles de La Fosse grace its walls. These masterpieces tell stories of faith and devotion. A small statue of Émilion de Combes sits proudly. He is the patron saint of wine merchants. This is a fitting tribute considering Bercy’s history as a wine center.

Even the organ has a story. Built around 1880 by the Stolz brothers it recently underwent restoration. The work was completed in 2022. Its music will now continue to resonate for generations.

The Église Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité stands as a testament to faith and perseverance. It is a beautiful church with a rich history. Its survival is a story to cherish. It is a reminder that even amidst chaos faith and community can rebuild and endure.
