“Viva Cristo Rey!” Do you hear the echo of those defiant words? They resonate through the Museo Padre Pro, a testament to faith and courage.

The Museo Padre Pro stands as a tribute to a remarkable man. It commemorates Padre Pro’s life and sacrifice. He defied the anti-clerical laws of his time.

Let’s step inside. The Museo Padre Pro isn’t large. Yet, it offers ample space for reflection on Padre Pro’s extraordinary story. You will find books, posters and postcards at the entrance. These items offer a glimpse into his life.

Padre Pro was a Catholic priest. He fearlessly ministered to his flock. This was during the harsh enforcement of the 1917 Constitution. This constitution imposed severe penalties on priests. They faced death for criticizing the government. Even wearing clerical garb outside churches was forbidden.

The Museo Padre Pro showcases photographs, artifacts, and letters. Newspaper clippings also tell his story. A blood-stained vest is protected behind glass. It is a poignant reminder. Padre Pro wore it when he was killed.

Born in 1891, Padre Pro entered the Jesuit novitiate. Anti-Catholicism forced him into exile. He studied in Spain, taught in Nicaragua. He was ordained a priest in Belgium in 1925. His wit and charity were well-known.

In 1926, he returned to Mexico City. Public worship was banned. Padre Pro secretly celebrated Mass. He distributed communion and baptized children. He heard confessions and anointed the sick. He even celebrated weddings in secret. Disguises were his way of life. He risked arrest daily.

Padre Pro served a Church forced underground. He administered sacraments to small groups. His letters, displayed in the Museo Padre Pro, reveal his dedication. He wrote of feeding the poor. Despite his own empty purse, he trusted in God.

A failed assassination attempt provided a pretext for his arrest. Padre Pro was falsely accused. In prison, he prayed for others. On November 23, he was led to his execution.

Padre Pro forgave his executioners. He refused a blindfold. He stood tall. “Viva Cristo Rey!” he proclaimed. The firing squad’s bullets ended his life.

The execution was photographed. The aim was to frighten the Cristero rebels. Instead, it ignited their fervor. Thousands lined the streets for his funeral.

Padre Pro’s story gained prominence. He was beatified in 1988. Pope John Paul II recognized him as a martyr. He died for his faith.

The Museo Padre Pro keeps his memory alive. It reminds us of his courage. It showcases his unwavering faith. His legacy inspires us to this day. Remember his final cry: “Viva Cristo Rey!”.
