A vision of neo-Gothic splendor, the Parroquia de María Auxiliadora rises before you in Mexico City’s Anáhuac neighborhood. The story of the Parroquia de María Auxiliadora is one of faith, perseverance, and architectural brilliance. Its construction spanned much of the 20th century, mirroring the changing landscape of Mexico City itself. The Salesians, an Italian order dedicated to educating underprivileged youth, first arrived in Mexico in 1892. They were gifted land in the Santa Julia colony by Eduardo Zozaya and Julia Gómez de Escalante, the last owners of the Hacienda de la Ascensión de Cristo. This generous donation set the stage for the construction of the Parroquia de María Auxiliadora, a testament to their devotion to Mary Help of Christians. The foundation stone was laid in 1897, with the initial design envisioned as a Romanesque masterpiece by architect Adrián Giombini Montanari. However, construction was halted in 1899 and only briefly resumed in 1906 with the erection of an iron framework. The Mexican Revolution further delayed progress, leaving the structure a mere six meters tall by 1925. The turmoil of the Cristero Wars and the subsequent expropriation of Salesian properties by the Cárdenas government in 1935 forced the congregation to relocate to the nearby Capilla de la Merced de las Huertas. It wasn’t until 1950 that the Salesians regained their property, and the Parroquia de María Auxiliadora project was revived in 1954. Architect Vicente Mendiola, known for his work on iconic landmarks like the Monumento del Petróleo and the Diana Cazadora fountain, took the helm. He skillfully adapted Giombini’s original neo-Gothic designs, seamlessly blending traditional style with modern building techniques. The Parroquia de María Auxiliadora is not merely a building; it’s a living canvas, reflecting the artistic contributions of renowned Mexican sculptor Ernesto Tamariz. His 3.6-meter-tall statue of Mary Help of Christians, installed in 1961, dominates the facade. The angels flanking the entrance stairs, added in 1992, a year after Tamariz’s death, serve as a final tribute to his enduring legacy. So, as you gaze at the Parroquia de María Auxiliadora, remember that its towering presence represents more than just architectural prowess. It embodies the enduring spirit of the Salesians, their commitment to education, and their unwavering faith in Mary Help of Christians.
