Considering how vital healthcare is, have you ever wondered about the history of military medicine in Hungary? Right here stands the Magyar Honvédség Egészségügyi Központ. Its story stretches back centuries. It is a place where military medical expertise has been developed.
The Magyar Honvédség Egészségügyi Központ is the Medical Centre of the Hungarian Defence Forces. You can also call it MH EK for short. Its roots go all the way back to 1781. Emperor Joseph II established a modern military healthcare system. This included permanent military hospitals. It also included a professional military medical corps.
Initially, it served as the military hospital for the Gyulay regiment in Pest. Soon after, it became the main garrison hospital. It provided care for all regiments stationed in the city. It even oversaw the operations of a sister hospital in Buda.
In the 19th century, its role expanded significantly. Besides treating patients, it became a training ground for military doctors. It served as a scientific hub. During mobilizations, it organized field healthcare services. It supplied personnel and medical materials.
The Magyar Honvédség Egészségügyi Központ moved several times. Finally, it settled here on Róbert Károly körút on June 30 1899. Until the Austro-Hungarian Empire dissolved, it was the 16th garrison hospital of the Imperial and Royal Common Army.
During the two World Wars, the Magyar Honvédség Egészségügyi Központ played a crucial role. It was a key scientific and practical base for military medicine. Its name changed several times due to military reorganizations. It served soldiers and the people of Budapest. During the siege of Budapest, the Swedish and Soviet Red Cross field hospitals operated here. The buildings suffered significant damage during the fighting.
After World War II, it reopened as the 1st Honvéd Garrison Hospital on June 2 1945. It became the central institution for military healthcare. It coordinated scientific activities. It trained personnel and published the Honvédorvos journal.
From 1991, it went through several name changes. It became the Magyar Honvédség Központi Katonai Kórháza. Later, it was named Központi Honvédkórház. For a short time in 2006-2007, it was named MH Dr. Radó György Központi Honvédkórház. With the military hospital network shrinking, it became the sole military healthcare institution in Hungary.
In 2007, five Budapest healthcare institutions merged to form the Állami Egészségügyi Központ. In November 2011, it was renamed MH Honvédkórház. On February 1 2013, it officially became the Magyar Honvédség Egészségügyi Központ. Despite organizational changes, its main function remained constant. It supports the Hungarian military’s activities both at home and abroad. This support ranges from medical care to fitness exams. It also includes research and development.
Since January 1 2023, the Honvédkórház has been separated from the MH EK. It now belongs to the Ministry of Interior.
Today, the Magyar Honvédség Egészségügyi Központ provides healthcare. It protects the health of Hungarian Defence Forces personnel. It offers specialized medical training. It supports the medical care of troops and missions.
The MH EK celebrates its team day on July 1. This is the anniversary of Ignác Semmelweis’s birth. He was a famous figure in the history of medicine. The central office of Magyar Honvédség Egészségügyi Központ is located at Róbert Károly körút 44.
