Here stands the Rami Library. This library wasn’t always a haven for books. It was once the historic Rami Barracks. Now, it stands as Türkiye’s largest library complex. It’s also one of Europe’s largest.
Imagine this expansive land. It was gifted to Rami Mehmed Pasha by Sultan Mustafa II. Records first noted it as Rami Barracks Farm. Sultan Mustafa III used it for army logistics. Ottoman sultans also took short trips here. These trips were known as Biniş-i Hümayun.
In 1826, military barracks were built here. They were for the Asâkir-i Mansûre-i Muhammediyye army. This was after the Janissary Quarry’s dissolution. In 1828, the barracks became known as the Rami Barracks. Sultan Mahmud II used it as his headquarters during the Ottoman-Russian War of 1828-29. Engineering students also occupied the Mekteb-i Harbiye within the barracks. A science center was even established.
After World War I, the Rami Barracks suffered damage. It continued to serve military purposes until 1971. Then, it was handed over to civil administration.
The idea to rebuild the Rami Barracks into a library emerged around 2010. This was when İstanbul was designated as a European Capital of Culture. Restoration began in 2014. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism oversaw the project. The İstanbul Directorate of Surveying and Monuments supervised it. It was completed in 2023.
The restoration preserved the barracks’ original structures. Damaged areas were rebuilt using natural materials and special techniques. The courtyard was greened. This brought a new expansive green space to İstanbul. The destroyed mosque was repaired and reopened.
The Rami Library now covers 220 decares. It has an indoor area of 36,000 square meters. Its courtyard spans 51,000 square meters.
The Rami Library aims to meet cultural, educational, and artistic needs. It offers a contemporary library experience. It embraces the concept of the “living library”. Ancient knowledge meets modern research here. It is a resource for those who will shape the future.
The Rami Library stands as a window into Türkiye’s information society. It responds to the cultural needs of society. It provides an entirely new library experience for all ages. The Rami. A testament to İstanbul’s enduring spirit. The Rami, a bridge between the past and the future.
