Ready to discover a bridge born from a bit of bad planning? I’m talking about the Cowie Street Over-Rail-Bridge. This bridge wasn’t just built for fun. It was a solution to a tricky problem created years ago.

Let’s rewind a bit. Back when subdivisions were being approved, someone forgot to insist on a through-road connection. Because of this oversight, Laxton Terrace, a small residential street, risked losing all road access. Imagine living on a street that suddenly becomes a dead end. That’s what the Cowie Street Over-Rail-Bridge prevents.

Instead of foresight, ratepayers ended up footing the bill for this new car-accessible bridge. The bridge ensures Laxton Terrace residents can still get where they need to go. The new Cowie Street Over-Rail-Bridge was eventually chosen after other options were considered. Some options were hotly debated by locals. Auckland Transport made the final call.

Now, Auckland Transport consulted on the bridge’s design. There were three concepts. Option 1 featured a two-lane road bridge with a shared path. Option 2 was similar. But it had a footpath instead. Option 3? Well, that was experimental. It was narrow, with passing pockets. Drivers would have to yield to each other and pedestrians.

Cycle Action strongly supported Option 1. They felt it was the safest option for everyone. Option 3 raised concerns about aggressive drivers endangering pedestrians and cyclists. What would happen if the experimental design didn’t work? The Cowie Street Over-Rail-Bridge might be too narrow to change.

The Cowie Street Over-Rail-Bridge project involved removing a level crossing. It also meant constructing a new dual-lane, single-span bridge over live rail lines. Think about the precision and care that required. Associated work included MSE Stone Strong faced abutments, internal piling, road work, and landscaping. The Cowie Street Over-Rail-Bridge wasn’t just about the bridge itself. It was about the whole surrounding area.

The need to close the Sarawia Street level crossing was a major factor. It was a particularly bothersome crossing. Many trains passed through it. Combined with its proximity to the Newmarket junction, it created operational challenges.

Options like a vehicle underpass and other over-rail bridges were considered. But they were dismissed due to cost, gradient issues, or environmental impact. A road link through to Furneaux Way was considered the best solution. It involved widening an existing pedestrian accessway.

But not everyone was thrilled. The Cowie Street Residents Association voiced strong opposition. They felt Auckland Transport management was ignoring the residents’ preference for a cheaper underpass option. There was even a split within Auckland Transport. The board seemed to recognize the opposition. But management pushed forward with the bridge.

So, next time you cross the Cowie Street Over-Rail-Bridge, remember its story. It’s a story of planning mishaps. It’s a story of community debate. And it’s a story of how a bridge became the solution to a problem that could have been avoided.
