Tucked away in the tranquil Vexin Français region Livilliers awaits. This charming village boasts a rich history. It’s a place where agricultural life thrives amidst vast fields of barley wheat and rapeseed.

Livilliers is more than just farmland. Its heart beats within the walls of its historic church. The Église Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité-et-Saint-Fiacre is a marvel. It’s a testament to centuries of faith and architectural ingenuity. This unassuming church holds a secret. It’s the smallest church in the region with a false triforium. This architectural feature above the main arches is usually found in grander cathedrals. Not in a small village church like Livilliers’s.

The church’s history is intertwined with the Abbey of Saint-Martin in Pontoise. Before 1150 the chapel of Livilliers was donated to the abbey. In 1175 it was elevated to parish status. Soon after construction on the current building began. The existing Romanesque bell tower was incorporated into the design. The architect boldly designed the nave with a three-level elevation. This is inspired by the famous Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris.

Despite its modest size the church has experienced significant challenges. Structural problems arose in its Gothic sections due to a lack of buttresses. Temporary measures were taken to keep the church standing. In the 21st century these problems worsened leading to the church’s closure. Fortunately its status as a historical monument allowed for significant restoration work. This was done between 2017 and 2019. The church reopened its doors to worshipers and visitors alike.

Livilliers is also a place of quiet moments. Imagine walking along the GR1 long-distance hiking trail. It passes through the village connecting it to other charming towns. The village’s tranquil beauty is easily accessible. It’s only a short distance from Pontoise and the bustling city of Paris. Livilliers offers the perfect blend of rural tranquility and proximity to urban life.

The past is present in Livilliers. The village holds the memories of Fernande Moittié and Elmire Vautier. These notable figures lived their final days in this quiet community. Livilliers’s story is one of resilience faith and enduring charm. A story whispered on the wind through the fields of gold a story etched in the stones of its historic church. It’s a story waiting to be discovered by those who take the time to explore its quiet corners. A story waiting for you.
