“Such a modern church for such an old city.” You might be surprised to learn that the Igreja de São João de Brito dates back to 1955. Despite its relatively recent construction, the church stands as a testament to resilience and architectural ingenuity. The Igreja de São João de Brito was designed by Vasco Regaleira. It replaced the former Igreja da Conceição Nova, which was demolished. The architect salvaged several valuable pieces from the old church. He incorporated the 18th-century altar, side altars, doorways, and baptismal font into the new design. Today, these elements stand in beautiful contrast to the modern architecture of the Igreja de São João de Brito. Look closely at the church’s façade. You’ll see a prominent gable adorned with a traditional Portuguese tiled roof. Atop the gable sits a bell tower and an impressive five-meter-tall wrought iron cross. At the center, a large window with diamond-shaped glass panes draws your eye. Standing before it is a granite statue of Saint John de Britto, crafted by Joaquim Correia. Above the window, you can spot the coat of arms of the Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon. Notice the granite frame surrounding the window. It bears an inscription in Latin: “INGREDIMINI IN CIVITATEM DOMINI ♥ AEDIFICATA EST VOBIS ECCLESIA NOVA MCMLII.” This translates to “Enter the city of the Lord ♥ A new church was built for you ♥ 1952”. The Igreja de São João de Brito stands not only as a place of worship but also as a symbol of continuity and rebirth in the ever-evolving cityscape of Lisbon.
