In the heart of Óbuda, nestled within the courtyard of the Óbuda Cultural Centre, discover the captivating San Marco Galéria. It’s not just a gallery; it’s a vibrant hub where art spills out from traditional confines and engages directly with the community. The San Marco Galéria first opened its doors in December 1998. Over the following two decades, it showcased a diverse mix of artists, from established figures to emerging talents. This eclectic blend of amateur and professional, fine and applied artists contributed to the gallery’s unique character. In 2013, art historian Gréta Garami took the reins as curator, bringing a renewed focus to contemporary art. Joined by Dóra Tenk in 2014, they transformed San Marco Galéria into a prominent exhibition space in Budapest. Their mission is to elevate the gallery’s role beyond its cultural centre setting. They aim to provide a platform for high-quality contemporary painting and create exhibitions accessible to both art connoisseurs and the general public. The San Marco Galéria actively participates in various cultural events. It’s a regular presence at the Ars Sacra Festival, Hungarian Painting Day, and the Night and Day of Cultural Houses. It also contributes to the Budapest Spring Festival and the Óbuda Summer event series. Unlike the sterile “white cube” aesthetic favoured by many contemporary galleries, San Marco Galéria embraces its multifunctional nature. Leveraging the cultural centre’s diverse audience, the gallery strives to curate exhibitions that resonate with both art professionals and the wider community. Since 2013, the gallery has expanded its offerings beyond exhibitions. It hosts art history lectures, open discussions, interactive children’s programs, and even publishes scholarly articles related to its exhibitions. The San Marco Galéria isn’t just a gallery; it’s a dynamic space where art comes alive.
