Is it just a street or a testament to extraordinary courage? This is Rue Mère-Marie Skobtsov.

Welcome. We stand at the entrance of Rue Mère-Marie Skobtsov. This street honors a remarkable woman. She was a Russian noblewoman, poet, nun and French Resistance member. Her life was one of profound faith and sacrifice.

Let’s delve into the story of Mère Marie Skobtsov. Born Elizaveta Yurievna Pilenko in 1891, she lived a life marked by dramatic changes. She married twice and became a nun later in life. She dedicated herself to helping the less fortunate.

In 1923, Elizaveta fled Russia with her family and settled in Paris. There, she became Mère Marie in 1932. She established a house, a convent of sorts, open to refugees. It welcomed the needy and the lonely. This house became a center for intellectual discussion. It also was for theological debate. Mère Marie believed service to the poor and theology went hand in hand.

During World War II, Mère Marie’s house became a haven for Jews seeking refuge. She and Father Dimitri provided baptismal certificates to those in need. They helped many to escape the country. In 1943, the Gestapo arrested Mère Marie. Father Dimitri and her son Yuri also got arrested.

Mère Marie was sent to Ravensbrück concentration camp. She died in the gas chamber on Holy Saturday in 1945. Her life ended tragically. Yet her bravery and compassion continue to inspire.

The city of Paris recognized Mère Marie Skobtsov’s heroism. The council voted to name this street in her honor. It’s located in the 15th arrondissement. The street sits near 77 Rue de Lourmel. Mère Marie opened her foyer for isolated women there in 1935. It became a hub for Russian immigrants.

The inauguration of Rue Mère-Marie Skobtsov occurred on March 31. This was the anniversary of her death. Alexandre Orlov, the Russian ambassador to France, attended.

Rue Mère-Marie Skobtsov is a loop. It connects Rue des Entrepreneurs and Rue de l’Église. It serves as a reminder of a woman. She risked her life to save others. She was canonized as a saint by the Orthodox Church in 2004. She is often called “Saint Marie of Paris.”

As you walk this street remember Mère Marie Skobtsov. Think about her unwavering commitment. Consider her dedication to helping those in need. Her spirit of resistance and compassion lives on. Rue Mère-Marie Skobtsov stands as a symbol. It represents hope, resilience, and the power of faith in the face of adversity.
