Founded on faith the Apostolic Church of God in Chicago stands tall. Its history stretches back to 1932. Elder Walter M Clemons answered a divine call. He rented a space on 57th Street. The church opened its doors on January 17th. For two decades it thrived under Clemons’ leadership. The congregation grew. They needed a bigger space. In 1952 the Apostolic Church of God moved to South Kimbark Avenue. Elder Clemons passed away in 1959. Elder Ahart Medders briefly led the church. A significant event shaped the church’s future. The Universal Church of Christ shared the building. Reverend Arthur M Brazier led this congregation. Robert McGee Sr and Deacon Gerald Nuckolls Sr saw an opportunity. They approached Rev Brazier with a proposition. They asked him to lead the Apostolic Church of God. He accepted the offer. The two congregations merged. This merger brought about 100 active members. Bishop Arthur M Brazier pastored the church for 48 years. Under his guidance the church expanded tremendously. New buildings rose. Additions were made to existing structures. The church now sits on 169000 square feet of land. In 2008 Bishop Brazier passed the leadership to his son Dr Byron T Brazier. The Apostolic Church of God experienced multiple building phases. The Kimbark Sanctuary was built in 1952. A larger Kenwood Sanctuary followed in 1977. The congregation grew to 500 members. They raised funds to construct this building. Further expansion led to the Dorchester Sanctuary in 1992. This sanctuary boasts 3000 seats. It includes classrooms offices and a television control room. A banquet hall was added in 1998. This 37000 square foot wing also included meeting rooms. In 2007 a Youth and Family Center opened. The center includes a gymnasium a recreation room and numerous meeting spaces. The Apostolic Church of God continues to grow. It remains a vital part of the Woodlawn community. It’s a place of worship faith and community. Dr Byron T Brazier emphasizes spiritual growth. He encourages worship prayer Bible study fasting and giving. He leads with seven assistant pastors. They work together to build the church and build people. The church’s mission transcends buildings.
