Beneath the open sky, Friedhof Roleber Om Berg unfolds. It’s a relatively young cemetery, established in 1984 on what was once farmland. Friedhof Roleber Om Berg sits at the edge of Roleber, outside the main residential area, giving it a village cemetery feel. Near the entrance, a simple, modern brick building houses the mourning hall. A striking contrast to this modern structure is a lone stone cross from the 18th century. This cross marks the resting place of Anton Frings. Frings was a journeyman who died in Roleber while mining brown coal. He fell to his death in a shaft with a wicker hoisting basket. Until the end of World War II, the cross stood on Giersbergstrasse. An antiques dealer expressed interest in the cross. A resident of Giersbergstrasse, concerned for its safety, took it to his home in Beuel. Eventually, the cross found its final home at Friedhof Roleber Om Berg. The cemetery’s layout is unique. The architects, Raderschall, Möhrer, and Peters designed the paths and groves. The design creates sightlines through the grave fields, aiding navigation. These sightlines also establish visual connections with the neighboring farmsteads of Ettenhausen to the west and Heiderhof to the east. Friedhof Roleber Om Berg covers 2.52 hectares. It’s not officially designated as a historical landmark.
