Ever wondered where cutting-edge research meets a diverse range of courses? It happens right here at Mathematik/Informatik in Mainz.

Welcome to the Faculty of Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. This faculty is a hub of scientific exploration. It brings together five institutes. These are the three Physics Institutes, the Institute of Mathematics, and the Institute of Computer Science.

The Institute of Nuclear Physics operates the Mainz Microtron MAMI. This particle accelerator produces electron beams. Scientists use these beams for experiments in nuclear and high-energy physics.

Numerical simulations play a vital role in scientific research here. They complement the classical areas of theory and experiment. While some relationships can be mapped by experimental setups, complex conditions demand modern simulation techniques. Computer science and mathematics provide these techniques.

The Department of Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science owes its success to its research diversity. Interdisciplinary cooperation and a wide range of courses contribute to its high recognition.

In 2014, the physics institutes of Johannes Gutenberg University ranked among the world’s top 75 researchers. Mainz physics was also named one of Germany’s six best institutions for physics. The CHE Excellence Ranking 2015 certified Mainz physics as particularly strong in research and internationally oriented.

Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz holds the top spot in the natural sciences in the German Research Foundation’s Förderkreis 2018. It received the most DFG funding of all German universities in the natural sciences between 2014 and 2016. The total was around 70 million euros.

The Faculty of Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science achieved a double success in the second phase of the Excellence Initiative of the Federation and the Länder. In June 2012, it raised funds of 30-40 million euros. This supported the Graduate School “Materials Science in Mainz” MAINZ and the Cluster of Excellence “Precision Physics, Fundamental Interactions and Structure of Matter” PRISMA.

The Graduate School focuses on scientific and practical training for PhD students in materials research. The Department of Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science plays a key role here. The Cluster of Excellence is primarily in physics. Projects in mathematics and nuclear chemistry supplement it. This creates ideal conditions for top-level research. It also ensures excellent student education and the promotion of young scientists.

Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz is competing with its full application for the Cluster of Excellence PRISMA+. An international panel of experts invited the JGU to submit a follow-up application for its Cluster of Excellence “Precision Physics, Fundamental Interactions, and Structure of Matter” PRISMA.

Doctoral degrees are available in various fields here. These include mathematics, physics, and computer science. Enrollment benefits include student accommodation options. Students also receive a semester ticket for regional public transportation. They can dine at campus cafeterias at student prices. International students may need an enrollment certificate. Students receive further discounts for museums and theaters.

The traditional doctoral approach involves independent research. An academic advisor provides supervision. Structured doctoral programs also exist. Students pursue their doctorates within a comprehensive framework. This framework is at a graduate school or center.

At the University of Mainz, the history of mathematics and the natural sciences can be studied as a minor. This is possible in the B.Sc. and M.Sc. programs in mathematics and physics. It is also a component of the M.Ed. program in mathematics.

So, as you stand before Mathematik/Informatik, remember that this is more than just a building. It is a place of discovery, innovation, and academic excellence. A place where the future of science is being shaped.
