Sixty-four meters of breathtaking Bosphorus views. That’s the impressive waterfront of the Kıbrıslı Mehmet Paşa Yalısı right before your eyes. This isn’t just any mansion. It’s a piece of Istanbul’s vibrant past.

The Kıbrıslı Mehmet Paşa Yalısı stands proudly on Gökksu Avenue in Kandilli Üsküdar. It boasts a history as rich and layered as the Bosphorus itself. Built in the 18th century for Grand Vizier İzzet Mehmet Pasha it has witnessed centuries of Ottoman grandeur. The building has been mostly owned by the same family since 1840. This remarkable longevity is a testament to its enduring allure.

İzzet Mehmet Pasha wasn’t just any Grand Vizier. He held the prestigious position twice. He’s also known as the Kara Vezir or Black Vizier. After his death the yalı passed to his son Sait Mehmet Bey. Sait Mehmet Bey was the second Mirahur. This is the second-highest official in charge of the Sultan’s stables and horses. He later rented the yalı to another İzzet Pasha. This one served Sultan Selim III.

The Kıbrıslı Mehmet Paşa Yalısı is more than just a stunning building. It’s a place of historical significance. Empress Eugénie of France stayed here. So did King Faisal II of Iraq and poet Yahya Kemal Beyatlı. The yalı even played a role in a fascinating historical event. During the 1980s there was a flurry of selling properties to Arabs. Even Sevda Hill the yalı’s grove was sold then. The seaside part of the property now belongs to Ömer Çürücü.

The Selamlık section remains the best-preserved part of the Kıbrıslı Mehmet Paşa Yalısı. A four-columned portico leads to its heart. The ceilings are adorned with stunning stucco work featuring botanical motifs. The eastern salon’s floor is a breathtaking mosaic. A marble fountain sits in the middle. Besides the main courtyards the yalı has a total of 21 rooms. Fifteen on the lower floor and six on the upper floor. The eyvans which are balconies on the sea and garden sides have wooden relief work on their ceilings. Even a life-sized portrait of Kıbrıslı Mehmet Emin Pasha himself hangs on the walls. The facade is enlivened with elegant detailing. Rows of slender windows provide ample natural light.

Sadly not all of the original yalı survives. A building from the late 18th century and three large bathhouses are gone. All that’s left in the garden are a marble fountain and a pool. Despite the losses the Kıbrıslı Mehmet Paşa Yalısı stands tall. It’s a magnificent testament to Ottoman architecture. It continues to captivate visitors with its timeless beauty and rich history. It’s a reminder of the lives lived and stories unfolded within its walls. And a symbol of Istanbul’s enduring charm. The yalı shows the blend of power history and elegance that this city represents.
